We are Kathi and Jonas and live together with our little zoo in a very spacious apartment in Kellinghusen ca. 50 km north of Hamburg.
Even as a little girl I loved inheritance and Livestock. The first animals, I've grown Elementary Age, were Dutch Bantams, I have even issued. Later zebra finches were added. Even then, Primary Age I devoured everything, I could find to some extent a child-friendly literature on genetics. This interest has continued until now, although the literature has become more demanding. As a young adult I have Siamese fighting fish (Betta Splendens) bred and worked on the development of the German standards.
My first pet rats I 2003 purchased. At first there were only two, to which then a third came to ... of proper integration, I knew then nothing, But everything went well (not recommended for imitation!). First, the three in a parakeet aviary lived, which was totally unsuited to current knowledge,, relatively quickly followed by a Unidom. After the three had to go over the rainbow bridge, followed by three small boys from an emergency department. After the three ca followed. 4 Year rat break. In summer 2016 We then decided, to dedicate ourselves again these wonderful animals. Four women from the shelter a subject, we have, "Could all be supporting" taken with the commentary. What they were fortunately not. These four ladies were all extremely shy and snappy - one of them remained so until her death. She was a happy rat, only allowed to the moon, where she was sleeping, do not come with a finger too close. but other rats to it was a real angel.
From there it was only a small step to the decision, to deal intensively with the subject rat breeding. The genetics of color rat is extremely exciting, some phenotypes can not be explained in detail and dip always new variants. Come in addition, that life and behavior of pet rats is very well researched and that there are tons of literature about these fascinating animals.
But of course it is not only the theoretical study of the animals, which makes us rat breeders. Our animals are a part of our family and we know the character of each of our boys and girls. Matings we are looking carefully and every throw is for us still a little miracle. We follow the growth of the small daily, look forward, when they finally come out of the nest and start, to nibble on human fingers. every time, if we let the kids go to a new home, it is to know something special for us, that they will enrich the lives of others as well, how they have enriched our.
Our rats live in a large US-style Kaskadendom with currently 37 modules each (Breite900 mm, depth 560 mm, Effective height 300 mm), or the vertically and horizontally connected. can be divided. I can divide the space very flexible. The cage is of course with numerous hiding, Cuddle nests and climbing equipped. In a Kaskadendom climbing opportunities are particularly important, because the animals can not climb over long distances to the grids.
For a litter of the mother rat is first made a single module with walk hiding places available. Here they can raise in peace for themselves and their babies. The daily discharge it must then make their pack members, so it does not fall completely out of the pack Association. When the babies themselves about. from day 5 on 18. can move safely day outside the nest, drag them around with her mum in our breeding range. There they live with other rats babies up to the age of ca. 8 Weeks and their mothers. Aged 32 Days the boys from the mother and her sisters are separated, but remain as a group in the breeding area until at least 56. Day with me. The girls are allowed to 56. stay day with her mother.
All my rats (Pups from 42. Tag) receive daily at least one hour secured and monitored freewheel.
My rats are primarily a self-mixed feed. There is also fresh food in moderation and if necessary additional protein sources such as e.g.. mealworms. Pregnant and nursing mothers are provided with additional protein.
In addition we have a large 3 Kaskadendom Euro Style in the hallway for our retired guys and many other cages (Maximus, Savic Double) if it even should be closely.
The range of adult girls behind the red doors. are you 10 Modules with a total ca. 5 sqm area available. All modules are interconnected.
The range of adult guys on the left behind the blue and black doors. They, too, are a total of ca. 5 sqm available.
Behind the yellow and black doors are throwing- and Separierungsbereiche. The yellow modules are all connected to each other or separated. Likewise, the two black modules can be connected or disconnected, , e.g. due to. when a female for a throw at first has only one level available, the babies, however, can later move on two levels, when they are older.
Another cage for litters or. in order to separate animals.
In these modules, the boys and girls grow from 32. Day separated from each other in the young group.
